Michelle Smith

Michelle Smith is a retired Irish swimmer who achieved notable success in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

Smith first appeared on the world scene as an 18-year-old at the Seoul Olympics, narrowly missing out on the semi-finals. Smith’s second major championship was at the 1991 World Championships in Perth, Australia, where she finished 13th in the 400 m individual medley.

She competed at the 1991 European Championships and qualified for the 1992 Olympic Games.

Despite suffering an injury in the months leading up to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Smith competed in the 200m medley and backstroke and 400m medley.

Smith won three gold medals and a bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, making her Ireland’s most decorated Olympian.
